Electric windows, air conditioning, leather seats, sports pack, sat-nav and iPod compatabile... Employees today expect a lot from their car, however with the small car now offering all the trimmings and space normally reserved for the luxury car the opportunity to buy smaller, greener cars and keep your employees happy has never been greater.

There are enormous benefits for everyone, company and employee, by using smaller cars. Did you know that by reducing a fleet's average CO2 emission rating by just one tax band a company can save thousands in overall operating costs, plus the cars are cheaper to lease in the first place? And the employees pay lower benefit-in-kind tax bills and the whole thing is better for the planet, so even the birds and the bees are happy.

If your employees use their own cars for business, then legally it is the responsibilty of the company to ensure they meet with all the legislation and regulations. Therefore, documentation checks should be made with companies recording vehicle service, insurance and MoT information applicable to privately-owned cars used on business.

Company cars emit less CO2 than private ones, this is because the average private car is 6.9 years old - far older than the average company car. If an employer allows private car use for business, then introducing selection perameter to ensure an environment approach to vehicle selection, plus green driving techniques and less car use can save up to 20% on transport costs.

As with any vehicle choice there are pros and cons to the alternative options. But the message is simple: ignore what is under the bonnet and look at the CO2 emissions that each vehicle produces. Then decide which choice is most cost-effective for your fleet and your drivers.

Businesses are responsible for buying over 50 per cent of all new cars registered in the UK. Today's new company cars are tomorrow's secondhand models, so vehicles bought by fleets sharply influence the shape of the used-car market. With private buyers heavily influenced by both the price of fuel and road tax, the continuing escalation in the cost of both will drive secondhand car purchasers towards more fuel efficient models. Therefore buying smaller greener cars will capitalise on future residual values.

In a nutshell:
  • remove high-emission cars from the fleet policy and incentivise downsizing
  • evaluate the potential for the use of alternative fuel vehicles
  • consider a CO2 emissions cap on company car choice lists
  • issue best practice environmental advice to private car drivers
  • observe used-car market demand for fuel-efficient vehicles
